What a Shoe Factory Actually Does: Services Explained

What full-service shoe manufacturing means

A full-service shoe factory handles every step from a finished tech pack (or sometimes just an idea) to a packaged, shipped pair of shoes. The scope varies by factory, but here is what most LA full-service operations cover.

Design and development

Some factories have in-house designers, others expect you to bring your own sketches and tech packs. Most fall somewhere in between.

What is usually included

  • Pattern making from sketches or measurements
  • Last sourcing or last modification
  • Sample rounds (typically 2–4 rounds before production)
  • Material sourcing (leather, lining, hardware, soles)

What may be an add-on

  • Industrial design (CAD / 3D modeling)
  • Custom hardware (logos, eyelets, zippers)
  • Last creation (a new last from scratch is a significant investment)
  • Print and graphic design (prints, embossing, debossing)

Sampling

Sampling is its own phase. Most factories charge per round — common ranges:

  • Round 1 (proto): 00–00
  • Round 2 (fit): 50–00
  • Round 3 (pre-production sample / PPS): 50–00

Some factories credit sample costs against your first production run. Ask.

Production

This is the core of what a factory does. For an LA shoe factory:

  • Cut: usually by hand for short runs, by machine for larger ones
  • Sewing / lasting: the heart of the operation
  • Sole attachment: cemented, stitched, vulcanized, or direct-injected depending on the construction
  • Finishing: edge paint, cleaning, conditioning
  • Quality control: in-line and end-of-line checks

Production MOQs in LA typically run 50–150 pairs per style per color. Smaller runs are possible at some factories but come with a per-unit premium.

Sourcing

A factory with a deep sourcing network can save you weeks of work and meaningful cost:

  • Leather (domestic and overseas)
  • Lining materials (leather, textile, synthetic)
  • Soles (rubber, EVA, leather, TPU)
  • Hardware (eyelets, hooks, buckles, zippers)
  • Laces, elastics, drawcords
  • Labels (brand, size, care, made-in)

If you bring your own materials, the factory will work with them. If you want the factory to source, expect the sourcing cost to be reflected in the per-unit price.

Custom services

Many LA shoe factories can handle work that overseas factories cannot:

  • Hand-stitched details
  • Custom sole molds (small runs)
  • One-off prototypes (celebrity, runway, special projects)
  • Restoration and small-batch production

If you have a project that does not fit a standard production line, an LA factory is usually the right place to start.

What factories usually do NOT do

- Brand or marketing work. That is a different industry. - Photography or lookbook production. Most factories can refer you to specialists. - Fulfillment / DTC shipping. Some offer it as a paid add-on; most do not. - Retail or wholesale distribution. Logistics is its own business.

A factory that claims to do all of these is either very large or stretching. Ask what they actually do in-house vs. partner on.

How to evaluate a factory

A few questions worth asking on a tour or a call:

  • What is your smallest production run you will accept?
  • What is your typical lead time for a 100-pair order?
  • Can you handle the construction I need (cemented, Goodyear, Blake, etc.)?
  • Do you have in-house pattern makers?
  • What is your pricing model (per-pair flat, hourly for development)?
  • Can I see past work that matches my style?

A reliable factory answers these directly. If you are getting vague answers, keep looking.
